LifeStraw Personal, and the new in 2008 LifeStraw Family, help make it possible for people in developing countries to have safe drinking water very inexpensively. They were developed by the Danish firm of Vestergaard Frandsen. Their website gives technical data, results of testing, and much more information. LifeStraw Personal is a small cylinder to be worn around the user's neck for point of use, cleans up to 700 liters, costs as little as $4.50, and is effective for about a year. LifeStraw Family has a bucket to hang up, a cleanable pre-filter to cleanse a minimum of 10,000 liters of water, and costs as little as $20.00. As explained on LifeStraw's website, financial support for these devices can be made through Rotary International in Fort Lauderdale, FL and IMA Worldwide in New Windsor, MD.

Vestergaard Frandsen also produces and distributes very inexpensive and effective anti-malaria mosquito nets. Contact their office or see www.permanet.com or www.zerofly.com
