One of the major challenges in developing countries is getting clean drinking water. Contaminated water accounts for 80% of all diseases in many places and kills five million children annually. Duvon McGuire invented a purification device (that can either be plugged into electric current or a 12-volt car batery or adapted for solar power) that turns common salt into chlorine. It can purify up to 55 gallons per minute. The basic system costs $1,000 USD, and the shipping weight is under 20 pounds. This could bring clean water for a cost of about $1.00 per person per year. It is used in some of the most impoverished places in over 50 countries. Their website has an interesting Louisville newspaper article and more information. |
