They have been a major leader in international health educaton since 1991. Their members represent over 70 professional health schools in the U.S. and Canada, and their mailing list includes over 1,000 physicians and medical school educators. GHEC encourages greater awareness of international medical needs, information sharing, and hands-on experiences in the developing world (with helpful contact information for medical students, residents, and educators). They give some mini-grants for student conferences. GHEC does not place students directly, but some of their members do. Recently they became part of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health.
The "resources" section of the GHEC website is very useful. It includes the "Annotated List of International Health Related Websites." by Thomas Hall, M.D. and Dr.P.H. in San Francisco. This condenses thousands of pages of data into 180 useful links. These links include educational programs, governmental and non-governmental organizations, job and placement opportunities, and miscellaneous other information resources. |
