REMEDY (based at Yale-New Haven Hospital since 1991) has helped approximately 500 hospitals--large and small--learn to recover clean, unused medical supplies from operating rooms so they can be recycled for overseas use. REMEDY's free Inservice Teaching Packet shows hospitals how to establish recycling programs for excess medical goods. They note that at least $200 million worth of supplies could be recovered from U.S. hospitals each year (just from operating rooms), and that could lead to a 50% increase in medical aid sent to the developing world.
Their Med-Eq program (formerly AIRe-mail) links donors and recipients of medical equipment and supplies through its website to member organizations. The "available items" section shows what is available throughout the U.S. and Canada. Learn more about it at www.med-eq.org |
