After Joni Eareckson Tada had a sudden injury that left her unable to move her arms or legs, she established this Christian ministry—of which Wheels for the World (WFTW) is one of five programs reaching out to the disabled. WFTW collects, restores, and distributes wheelchairs overseas to the poor and needy in emerging countries. Americans can pull up their website and enter their zip code to find the closest drop-off locations to where they live. As of August 2011, they have sent over 70,000 wheelchairs to over 100 countries. Seventeen U.S. prisons have programs in which inmates restore WFTW wheelchairs for shipping. Their website has many links about various physical and mental disorders and resources to deal with them. |
